  • What are the two types of blood vessels in the circulatory system?
    Veins and Arteries.
  • What are 3 functions of roots?
    1. they absorb water and minerals from soil; 2. they anchor the plant in the ground; 3. some plants store food in their roots.
  • What is fertilisation and where does it take place?
when the nucleus of the sperm cell and nucleus of the egg cell join together. It takes place in the oviduct.
  • What is aerobic respiration?
respiration is the release of energy from glucose by reacting with oxygen inside living cells.
  • How many are there in gametes?
    23 chromosomes
  • What is photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis is the way that plants make food using energy from light.
  • What is biomass?
Materials that are made up of living cells and tissues.
  • What are antibodies?
Special molecules produced by white blood cells that attach to bacteria and kill them.
  • What is digestion?
Digestion is the breakdown of large molecules into small ones, so that they can be absorbed
  • How many chromosomes are in every cell in your body?
46 chromosomes in every cell in your body.
  • In what organ does gaseous exchange happen?
    the lungs
  • Why are red blood cells red?
Red blood cells contain a red pigment called hemoglobin.
  • What is absorption?
Absorption is the movement of nutrient molecules from the alimentary canal into the blood.
  • Why are plants green?
Because they contain a green pigment called chlorophyll, which captures energy from light.
  • What are gametes?
cells that are adapted for reproduction.
  • What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide + water = glucose and oxygen
  • Which three nutrients provide the body with energy?
    Proteins, carbohydrates and fats.
  • What is gas exchange?
oxygen passing from the air into the blood, and carbon dioxide passing out of the blood into the air.
  • What happens to the menstrual cycle if the egg cell is fertilized?
The menstrual cycle will stop while pregnant.
  • What is adolescence?
The time of change from childhood to adulthood.
  • What happens if an egg cell is fertilized?
The zygote divides to create a ball of cells called an embryo. The embryo enters the uterus and sinks into the lining and starts to develop into a foetus.
  • What happens if the egg is not fertilized?
If the egg is not fertilized, the thick lining breaks down and is lost through the vagina. This is called the menstrual cycle or a period.
  • What is a balanced diet?
a diet that provides all the different kinds of nutrients and the right amount of energy.
  • What are the female and males gametes called?
    Egg cells and Sperm cells.
  • What are nutrients?
substances in food that the body uses to provide energy and material for making the chemicals the body needs.
  • What is respiration?
a chemical reaction that happens inside every living cell, in which energy is released from glucose so that the cell can use it.
