  • Culprit: A person who is responsible for a crime or other misdeed.
    Noun: Viruses could turn out to be the culprit.
  • Jury: A body of people (typically twelve in number) sworn to give a verdict in a legal case on the basis of evidence submitted to them in court.
    Noun: The jury returned unanimous guilty verdicts.

  • Arrest: An arrest is using legal authority to deprive a person of his or her freedom of movement.

  • Sentence: A set of words that is complete in itself, typically containing a subject and predicate, conveying a statement, question, exclamation, or command, and consisting of a main clause and sometimes one or more subordinate clauses.
    Noun: Her husband is serving a three-year sentence for fraud.
  • Plead: Make an emotional appeal.
    Verb: Don't go, she pleaded.
  • Jail: A place for the confinement of people accused or convicted of a crime.
    Noun: He served 15 months in jail.
  • Testify: Give evidence as a witness in a law court.
    Verb: He testified against his own commander.
  • Charge: Demand (an amount) as a price from someone for a service rendered or goods supplied.
    Verb: He charged me 2 euros for the postcard.
  • Innocent: Not guilty of a crime or offense.
    Adjective: The arbitrary execution of an innocent man.
  • Suspect: Have an idea or impression of the existence, presence, or truth of (something) without certain proof.
    Verb: If you suspect a gas leak, do not turn on an electric light.
  • Bail: The temporary release of an accused person awaiting trial, sometimes on condition that a sum of money be lodged to guarantee their appearance in court.
    Noun: He has been released on bail.
