  • A rigid casing used for immobilizing a usually diseased or broken part.
    CAST - Example 1: The doctor told Tom that he had to wear a cast for three weeks. Example 2: Peter's right leg is still in a cast.
  • A light in or at the side of a road or public area that is usually supported on a tall post.
    STREETLIGHT - Example 1: If you're out at night, choose routes that are well-lit by streetlights.. Example 2: He crashed his car into a streetlight.
  • It's an adjective. It means a standard or level that is considered to be typical or usual. Not excellent, although not bad.
    AVERAGE - Example 1: The food was fairly average. Example 2: My grades are above average.
  • All the animals, plants, rocks, etc. in the world.
    NATURE - Example 1: Nature is full of mysteries. Example 2: Ancient people lived close to nature.
  • A notice giving information, directions, a warning, etc.
    SIGN - Example 1: The sign in the store window says “OPEN.” Example 2: I can't see the road signs in this fog.
  • A set of automatically operated colored lights, typically red, amber, and green, for controlling traffic at road junctions and crosswalks.
    TRAFFIC LIGHT - Example 1: Some people no longer stop at traffic lights, especially at night. Example 2: The traffic light changed really quickly.
  • The buildings, equipment, and services provided for a particular purpose
    FACILITIES - Example 1: There are excellent facilities for sport and recreation. Example 2: Our town has excellent sports facilities.
  • It's a verb. It means make something better.
    IMPROVE - Example 1: He did a lot to improve conditions for factory workers. Example 2: Improve your time and your time will improve you.
  • The activities associated with the governance of a country or another area.
    POLITICS - Example 1: Andrew became active in politics. Example 2: I'm really not interested in politics.
  • Damage caused to water, air, etc. by harmful substances or waste.
    POLLUTION - Example 1: The company claims it isn't responsible for the pollution in the river. Example 2: The tests show high levels of pollution in the water.
  • A smaller number of things. Used with countables. 
    FEWER - Example 1: They've got fewer problems than they used to have. Example 2: There should be fewer cars in the city. There should be fewer
  • The money a passenger on public transportation has to pay.
    FARE - Example 1: Children travel half fare. Example 2: She didn't have enough money for the bus fare.
  • It's a phrasal verb. It means to begin to do something, become interested or engaged in a pursuit.
    TAKE UP - Example 1: She took up tennis at the age of 11. Example 2: When spring arrives, I am going to take up a new sport.
  • It's something that belongs to you. Something that you own, that you possess.
    POSSESSION - Example 1: The possession of stolen property is a criminal offence. Example 2: Our health is our most precious possession.
  • The period during which a person is a kid.
    CHILDHOOD - Example 1: I had such a happy childhood. Example 2: She spent most of her childhood on a farm in Texas.
  • The line of short hairs above each eye in humans.
    EYEBROW - Example 1: Do you pluck your eyebrows? Example 2: My eyebrows always grow back very quickly after plucking.
  • It's an adjective. It means cheap enough for most people to buy.
    AFFORDABLE Example 1: The restaurant serves good food at affordable prices. Example 2: There are few affordable apartments in big cities.
  • It's a phrasal verb. It means happen, occur.
    TAKE PLACE - Example 1: The story takes place in the 18th century. Example 2: The Olympics take place every four years.
