  • What is the difference between an enclave and exclave?
    Enclave: nation surrounded by another state (Lesotho) / Exclave: part of a nation that is geographically separated (Kalingrad / Alaska)
  • What is ethnic cleansing and provide an example?
    Attempt to remove an entire ethnic group (usually violently) (Armenia, Holocaust, Rwanda, Kosovo).
  • What is redlining?
    An illegal practice where people deny loans to certain people, usually racial based (almost literally draw a red line on a map and those inside are denied).
  • What is an ethnic neighborhood and give an example?
    Place where there is a concentration of people with the same ethnicity within a city.
  • Explain the concept of white flight?
    When white people leave an area due to an increase of other minorities (usually African American)
  • What is the difference between de jure and de factor segregation?
    De jure is legal segregation and de factor is more custom segregation.

    White owners were convinced to sell their homes before blacks moved in and then blacks were charged high prices for the same home.

    Influx of African American people moving to the major cities of the US to find better jobs (after WWII).

    India gained independence in 1947 and Pakistan sought independence due to religious differences.
  • What is a multi-national state?
    Area where two or more ethnic groups agree to coexist (UK, Russia, US).
  • What is Balkanization?
    This is the fracturing of an area due to intense nationalism / ethnic tension.
  • What is nationalism?
    loyalty / devotion to a nationality. Promote that nationality over all others.
  • How could Barack Obama have a difficulty time identifying his race / ethnicity / nationality?
    He has a white American mother who is of English descent and a black African father from Kenya.
  • Explain the difference between centripetal / centrifugal forces and how they apply to race.
    Centripetal (bonds an area) / Centrifugal (tears it apart). Examples will vary.

    Borders were drawn with little to no concern for ethnic lands, causing conflicts when nations achieved independence (who would lead?)

    Nation: group who share common culture, state: control sovereign territory, nation-state: similar culture and control territory.
