  • Negotiate: You and a friend both want to use the same red marker for an art project. You need it to finish your drawing, and so do they. How could you negotiate with your friend so both of you can get what you need?

    I’d tone it down, check in with them, or shift the conversation so everyone feels comfortable.

    I might say, ‘We both have different ideas. Can we talk about why each idea might work? We could get another opinion or take a vote.
  • Inferencing: Imagine a friend says, “Yeah, I guess it’s fine,” but their tone sounds annoyed and they avoid eye contact. How could you use inferencing to understand what they might really be feeling?
    I’d realize their words and tone don’t match, and I’d guess they might actually be upset. I could ask, ‘Are you sure you’re okay?

    You can shorten your vocal language to 1-2 words, you can write it down for someone to read, you can use your phone to speak to text, etc.
