Who's the murderer?

Daniel has debts of about 9000 pounds.

At 11 o’clock Mr. Crabtree gets up and said he has a letter to write. He goes into the study.

Mrs. Crabtree’s name is Anne.

A piece of red material is on the window.

Alec Crabtree is writing a letter. It begins: “Dear Anne, I don’t know how to tell you this, but I am leaving you. Alice and I…”

Mrs. Crabtree’s name is not Alice.

In the drawer of the desk is a will. The will leaves 10000 pounds to Daniel.

Mrs. Crabtree, Mrs. Fairfax and Daniel are all wearing red.

Everyone is playing cards until 11 p.m., except the maid, who is washing-up in the kitchen between 10.30 and 11.15.

A cigarette-end is near the body.

Daniel and Mr. Fairfax start to watch a TV program after the game of cards finishes at 11 o’clock. They are still watching it at 11:05 when Alice Fairfax comes in and joins them.

The maid hears footsteps in the hall and the study door opening at just after 11 o’clock.

At about 11:10 the maid hears the front door opening again. This time it is Mrs. Crabtree, who comes into the kitchen and starts to make tea for herself and her husband.

A note is in Mrs. Crabtree’s handbag. It says: “Alec, meet me in the garden at 11 o’clock. Alice”.

Mrs. Fairfax goes outside at 11 o’clock, saying she is hot and needs fresh air.

At about 11:05 the maid hears the front door opening and footsteps in the hall. It is Mrs. Fairfax, coming in from the garden. She goes straight into the living room.

Everybody smokes except Mr. Crabtree and the maid.
