  • inflict losses
    cause damage or harm to the enemy. ex: the airstrike was successful and inflicted heavy losses on the enemy forces.

    successfully penetrate or overcome an enemy's defensive line. ex: The army managed to make a breakthrough in the war by capturing the enemy's main supply route
