  • A peer keeps interrupting you during group work.
    Direct communication: "Can I finish what I was saying first?"
  • A peer leaves you out of a game on purpose.
    Passive response: Walk away and play something else without saying anything.
  • You feel left out when others are whispering.
    Passive response: Stay quiet and pretend not to notice.
  • You don’t like how someone is talking to you.
    Direct communication: "I don’t like that tone. Can you speak more nicely?"
  • Your sibling wont stop singing while you do homework.
    Direct communication: "Can you please be quiet? I'm trying to do my homework."
  • You don't like the game being played at recess.
    Direct communication: "Can we take turns choosing the game?"
  • Someone whispers about you.
    Passive communication: you can ignore them
  • A classmate keeps copying your answers.
    Direct communication: "I worked hard on this. Please do your own work."
  • You need a break during class.
    Direct communication: "Can I take a break for a few minutes?"
  • Someone says you’re not good at something.
    Direct communication: "That was unkind. I’m still learning, and I’m trying my best."
  • A classmate cuts in line.
    Direct communication: "Excuse me, I was next."
  • Someone gives you a mean look
    Passive response: you can ignore them or walk away
  • You get assigned a partner you don’t get along with.
    Passive response: Stay quiet and work anyway without saying anything.
  • You don’t like how someone is treating your friend.
    Direct communication: "Please stop treating my friend like that. It's not kind."
  • Someone takes your pencil without asking.
    Direct communication: "'Please ask before taking my things."
  • Your friend says something that hurts your feelings.
    Direct communication: "That really hurt my feelings. Please don’t say that again."
  • Your friend talks over you
    Direct communication: "Please don't interrupt me, I wasn't done speaking."
  • Someone makes fun of your lunch.

    Passive response: just ignore it
  • Someone keeps calling you a nickname you don’t like.
    Direct communication: "I don’t like being called that. Please use my real name."
