  • How long is the exam?

    That you can't decide between x and y
  • What is different to the B2 First in part 2 of the exam?
    You get 3 pictures to choose from and you have 2 questions.
  • If you get a band mark 5 overall, then this shows you have a speaking level of the next level up. (true or false)
    True, but, you don't get the certificate for the higher level
  • PT 1 always starts with the same questions, which is different from the B2 First. Can you tell us what the questions are?
    Teacher decides if your answer is correct - with help from the audience!
  • What does "you have hit the nail on the head" mean?
    I totally agree with you/ you are totally correct.

  • What is the meaning of the term Paralinguistics?
    Paralinguistics are the aspects of spoken communication that do not involve words. These may add emphasis or shades of meaning to what people say.
  • What are the 5 criteria the assessor marks you on?
    Grammar, Vocabulary, Pronunciation, Discourse Management, Interactive Communication.
  • At C1 Advanced what may be considered when assessing pronunciation to pass?
    The ability to use intonation to express meaning, that there are no L1 barriers, etc.
  • Which parts of the exam are you expected to have a conversation with your partner?
    Parts 3 & 4
  • What is a good organisational pattern to give an effective opinion to answer a question in part 4?
    Focus is on whether the opinion is effective and staged e.g. P.E.E.(L) Audience decides if answer correct.
  • Do you need to come to an agreement in the 2nd task in part 3?
    No, but you should demonstrate that you are working towards an outcome (to agree or disagree)
  • How early should you arrive to the speaking exam and what must you bring?
    20 minutes before the start of the exam (You will also get your photo taken).  You must bring your DNI!
  • What is turn taking? Is this a good strategy for Part 3?
    No! (students own answer)
  • Can you tell us what do you need to do in Part 2 of the speaking?
    Compare two photos (out of a choice of 3) and answer two questions in one minute.
  • Why might you have to do the exam in a group of 3? What is different about the exam if this happens?
    At the end of a session you may be in a group of 3 due to odd numbers. Timings are different - 20 minutes in total.
  • Do you think you should try to engage the interlocutor when talking throughout the exam?
    Yes, the global marks is based on this, however, in part 3 the interlocutor only gives instructions and does not take part.
  • Asking the examiner to repeat a question is a negative thing? (True or False)
    False
  • What happens in Parts 3 of the exam?
    E.g. interactive negotiation task with your partner, in 2 parts: 1st is a brief discussion on a topic using a central question as the themes etc
