    Peasants were either free or unfree. Free peasants rented land to farm and owed rent to the Lord. Unfree peasants, or serfs, could not leave the land.

    A vassal is someone is subordinate to you. In other words, they serve you. Knights were vassals to their Lords, as were peasants too.
