These types of settlements are tied to agrarian areas and which most of the population is employed in agrarian activities. In Spain these settlements refer to municipalities of less than 10.000 inhabitants (except agro-cities).

Rural houses do not form a compact nucleus. They are most common in the peninsula's periphery and the Balearic and Canary Islands
