Because she and Matthew wanted a boy and not a girl. Yes, she changes her mind after Anne tells her story.

She's 11 years old. She was born in Canada. Her parents died when she was 3 months old. First she lived with different families, and then in an orphanage.

She asks to stay in Green Gables.
