  • Your teacher walks into the classroom with a very bright colorful shirt. You say "are you a part of the circus?". Your teacher looks confused. Is this an EXPECTED or UNEXPECTED behavior? Why?
    UNEXPECTED. Your comment implies that he looks like he belongs in a circus. Obviously your teacher is not a part of the circus. This hurts his feelings.

  • You see someone walking with crutches and stare at them while saying "what happened to you?". Is this an EXPECTED or UNEXPECTED behavior? Why?
    UNEXPECTED. Staring and commenting about their injury will make them feel uncomfortable.

  • A friend is talking about their favorite video game. You interrupt them to say "I never liked that game" and start talking about your favorite game. Is this an EXPECTED or UNEXPECTED behavior? Why?
    UNEXPECTED. Your friend may feel hurt because you interrupted them and don't want to talk about their interests.

    UNEXPECTED. Your friend might be annoyed. You should wait your turn to answer a question or ask your friend if they need help.

    UNEXPECTED. You should always be truthful with your parents, even when it might not be what they want to hear or might get you into trouble.

    UNEXPECTED. It's important to communicate your feelings with your family and treat them kindly. You can tell dad the truth about feeling frustrated.

  • Your teacher asks you a question. You don't know the answer yet so you respond with "I'm thinking". She says "okay, let me know when you have the answer". Is this an EXPECTED or UNEXPECTED behavior? Why?
    EXPECTED: I can let my teacher know that I'm still thinking so she knows that I'm paying attention, but not ready to answer yet.

    UNEXPECTED. Prying into my friend's personal matters can make them feel uncomfortable. I should ask a more appropriate question.

    EXPECTED. We can communicate our feelings and wishes with our friends, without having to share personal information if we don't want to.

    EXPECTED. It's important to be honest with your parents, even when it might get you in trouble or make you feel irritated.

    EXPECTED. Introducing yourself to new people (friends and adults) is the polite thing to do.

    UNEXPECTED. It's usually not appropriate to make jokes when someone is hurt. It can be appropriate depending on the person's personality and mood.
