A flat bone that forms the middle portion of the rib cage and can be felt just under the skin in the middle of the front of the chest.
Sternum
Attached only to the vertebral column at the back. They don’t articulate with the sternum, their anterior tips being free.
Floating Ribs
Arise from the thoracic vertebrae at the back but don’t attach to the sternum directly.
False Ribs
Independently attached to the sternum anteriorly with the help of the costal cartilage and to the thoracic vertebrae posteriorly.
