What is the organization from cells to organism?
Cell – tissues – organs – organ system- organism
What is the definition of a cell?
cell= smallest level of organization
What is the definition of homeostasis?
Homeostasis= how your body “balances” itself. It regulates your temperature, chemicals, and water in YOUR BODY
What is the definition of metabolism?
Metabolism= all the chemical reactions in your body that change food into energy.
What are TWO examples of metabolism? Hint: flowers + sun and food!
photosynthesis and cellular respiration
What is photosynthesis?
photosynthesis= plants use sunlight to make foods from carbon dioxide and water.
What is cellular respiration?
cellular resp= take energy from glucose (food you eat) and make ATP
What is ATP?
ATP= molecule that carries energy
What does it mean for cells to be “specialized?”
What does gets “old” mean?- cells are “specialized”- turn into the types of cells we need
What is a blastocyst?
Blastocyst= hollow ball of cells
What is pluripotent?
Pluripotent= can make multiple cell types
What is a STEM cell?
STEM cell=cell that can turn into other kinds of cells (it starts out basic and can TURN INTO a more specific cell)
What is a zygote?
fertilized egg= “zygote” (female ovum +male sperm)- its a solid ball of cells
Give ONE example of a specialized type of cell? Hint: They originate from STEM cells, example: muscle cells
blood cells= cells found circulating in the blood
neurons= cells in the brain
cartilage= covers/ protects bones
What does DNA contain? (Hint: it is used to make proteins and is passed from generation to generation.)
DNA containing genes for making proteins is passed to another generation.
