What are context clues?
Context clues are hints that an author gives to help define a difficult or unusual word within a sentence or paragraph.

“such as,” “including,” “consists of,” “like,” or “for example.”
What is a synonym?
A word with the same or nearly same meaning.

What is the process for finding and understanding context clues?
1. Find unknown word/idea. 2. Re-read the sentence. 3. Find the context clues 4. Make an educated guess. 5. Try that guess and see if it makes sense!
Find the context clue BEFORE the word.
Jose love all animals except he LOATHED cats and refused to even be in the room if there was a cat in it!

Definition: The definition of sky scraper is "tall building"
What type of context clue is in this sentence: Instruments, such as the violin and the piano, were played at the concert.
Example: piano and violin are examples of instruments.
What type of context clue is in this sentence: I ran swiftly to catch the vase, but I wasn't fast enough.
Synonym: Swiftly means the same thing as fast.
What type of context clue is in this sentence: We want to move out of our small house into a more spacious house.
Antonym: Spacious is the opposite of small.
