Because he felt angry because he couldn't make a fire to be rescued

His anger made him promise himself not to let another ship go by without rescuing him so he prepared what he needed to make sure he would be seen next time

He threw it to a rock so it broke into pieces.

Michael and Kensuke's relationship becomes more tense as the boy tries to escape and Kensuke does not let him. Micheal feels like a prisoner.

Time moves faster because we are shown a lot of days going by in just one chapter.
