Physical Map
This indicates the subject of the map and tells you what information it contains.
Title
Shows NORTH (N), SOUTH (S), EAST (E), WEST (W), on the map; sometimes only shows NORTH.
Compass Rose
North, East, South, and West
Cardinal Directions
Northeast, Southeast, Southwest, Northwest
Intermediate Directions
Compares a unit of length on the map and a unit of distance on Earth.
Scale Bar
Designs on a map may stand for capital cities, economic activities, natural resources, etc.
Symbols
This "unlocks" the code to the symbols on a map; it lists and explains the symbols and colors used on the map.
Key/Legend
Imaginary lines that show distances north or south of the Equator.
Lines of Latitude
Imaginary lines that show distances east and west of the Prime Meridian.
Lines of Longitude
This is created when the lines of latitude and lines of longitude intersect one another.
Map Grid
Describes altitude, also called relief.
Elevation
A line of latitude that circles Earth halfway between the North and South Poles.
Equator
A line of longitude that runs from the North Pole to the South Pole through Greenwich, England.
Prime Meridian
One half of the Earth.
Hemisphere
Maps that focus on specific ideas or themes.
