It means that families rent land from a landowner and pay them with the harvest.
Mama asks other farmers not to go shopping at the Wallace store. Why is this difficult?
1. There are not many stores. 2. The Wallace store gives the sharecroppers credit during the year. 3. They are scared of the Wallace family.
Why does Papa have to work on the railtracks?
He needs to earn money to pay the taxes and mortgage for the land.

Why did Stacey get whipped by his mother at school?
TJ had prepared cheat papers and passed them to Stacey. Stacey was caught with them, but did not tell on his friend.
Why did Little Man and Cassie get whipped at school?
They refused the very old books that had a bad word in them.

Why are the children so angry at the school bus?
1. First, it is unfair that the white children get driven, especially when it rains. 2. The driver makes the Logans wet on purpose.
