Because he did not want the criminals to know that anyone was looking for them.

Why did the ragged children make such good agents for Holmes?
Because nobody was afraid of children. They could go anywhere, see everything and hear everything.
Doctor Watson went to tell Miss Morstan that they had not found the treasure. That night he could not sleep. What was Watson thinking about?
He was thinking about Miss Morstan. He wanted to ask her to marry him.
How had Inspector Jones changed?
He was not rude any more. He was very quiet and polite.
Where was the Aurora hidden?
In a boatyard near the river.
What were the murderers planning to do?
They were planning to go to America. The Aurora would take them to a ship that was waiting for them out at sea.
Suddenly a launch came out of the boatyard. How did they know that it was the Aurora?

He fell backwards into the water with a terrible cry.

He had jumped out of the steam launch but his wooden leg had stuck in the mud.

The Agra Treasure.
How had Holmes and Watson escaped a terrible death?
The poisoned dart the pygmy had shot at them had passed through the air between them.
Who was Jonathan Small?
He was the wooden-legged man.
Why did Watson not want to take the treasure to Miss Morstan?
He did not want her to become a rich woman.
Why was Watson much happier after the chest had been opened?
Because there was nothing in it. Miss Morstan was not rich. Now Watson could tell her his feelings. He could ask her to marry him.
