It was Brooks, the burglar.
Том знал, что полиция его усиленно разыскивала (wanted him very much).
Tom knew that the police wanted him very much.
Брукс примерил (tried on) несколько (a few) пар (pairs of) туфель, а потом купил пару, которую (which) Том настоятельно (strongly) порекомендовал (recommended).
Brooks tried on a few pairs of shoes and then bought the pair which Tom strongly recommended.
Брукс думал, что они были немного тесными (tight), но Том сказал: "Не беспокойтесь, они растянутся (stretch), сэр".
Brooks thought they were a bit tight, but Tom said, "Don't worry, they'll stretch, sir."
На следующее утро (The next morning) Брукс пришёл в магазин поменять (to change) туфли.
The next morning Brooks came into the shop to change his shoes.
Он был очень недоволен и имел слабую улыбку (a weak smile) на своём уродливом (ugly) лице.
He was very unhappy and had a weak smile on his ugly face.
Но когда он попросил (asked for) другую пару туфель (a different pair of shoes), полиция арестовала его, поскольку (as) полицейские были в магазине.
But when he asked for a different pair of shoes, the police arrested him as the policemen were in the shop.
Они знали, что Брукс взял (had) пару туфель (a pair of shoes) слишком маленького размера (a size too small) для него, и они были уверены: он придёт (would come) поменять (to change) их на следующий день (the next day).
They knew that Brooks had a pair of shoes a size too small for him and they wеre sure he would come to change them the next day.
Каким умным торговцем (What a clever salesman) Том Бокселл был!
