  • A brick is kept in three different ways on a table as shown in given figure. The pressure exerted by the brick on the table will be ________ at position 1 (the leftmost position)
    minimum
  •  15
  • Calculate the pressure exerted by the brick in the 2nd position if the weight of the block is 10N.
    2000 Pa or 2 kPa
  •  15
  • The pressure exerted by a red block is 10 Pa while the pressure exerted by a blue block is 4 Pa. If the number of blocks is doubled, what is the total pressure exerted? Explain your answer with reasons.
The pressure will double as the force is doubled but the area remains constant.

  • Why is it easier to walk on soft sand with flat shoes instead of pointed heels?
The surface area of the heels is smaller, thus lower the area, higher the pressure. This makes it difficult to walk as the heels will penetrate into the sand.

  • A container is filled with oil as shown in the figure. Compare the pressure of oil at the different points A, B, C.
    Pressure at A < Pressure at B < Pressure at C

  • Two rods: A and B, having same weight and equal length have different thickness. Rod A is thinner while Rod B is thicker. They are held vertically on the surface of sand. Which one of them will sink more? Why?
Rod A will sink more as the area of contact is less which leads to increase in pressure.

  • Volume of water in each vessel is shown above. Arrange them in order of decreasing pressure at the base of each vessel. Explain the reason.
B>D>A>C. The liquid pressure depends on the height of the liquid column and not on the total volume of liquid.

  • Following are the altitudes of three Canadian towns: Lake Louis - 5033 feet, Banff - 4540 feet, Kimberley - 3600 feet. What will happen to a balloon if you inflate it and drive from Lake Louis to Kimberley?
As the atmospheric pressure increases, from Lake Louis till Kimberley, due to the decrease in height from the sea level, the inflated balloon will shrink.

  • Explain the working principle of a syringe based on atmospheric pressure.
Partial Vacuum inside the body of syringe, high pressure outside, this helps the syringe to draw the liquid into the body when we pull the piston

  • Why is the balloon in the second test tube more bulged?
As the height of the water in test tube is more, the pressure increases thus inflating the balloon
  •  15
  • It is much easier to burst an inflated balloon with a needle than your finger. Explain.
The surface area in contact with the balloon increases when using a finger. This decreases the pressure acting on it.

  • Why do you feel pain at the back of your ears when you wear a new mask with thin straps?
The thin straps reduce the surface in contact with the ear. This increases the pressure exerted by the strap behind the ear, thus causing pain.
