    Added Missouri to the Union as a slave state and Maine as a free state, keeping the balance between slave and free states. Also used Lat 36°30' as marker line.

    North- Missouri is North of the Ohio and thought Ohio line should extend west. South- Worried slavery would be banned across the Louisiana territory.

    California would be added to the Union as a free state for the North, New Mexico and Utah would decide for themselves to be free or slave to please the South.

    Fugitive Slave Act meant that any slave that ran to the North, could be recaptured and returned to the South.

    Northerners didn't want to enforce the act and send the slave back. Southerners felt the act wasn't upheld enough to return of their property.

    created two new territories, Kansas and Nebraska. It also got rid of the Missouri Compromise by using popular sovereignty to decide to be a free or slave state.

    North worried slavery supporters would flood the new states.. South influenced the bill so that voters could choose, so slavery could be a possibility.

  • Why was the Lincoln-Douglas debate so important? What was Lincolns main point?
    It introduced Abraham Lincoln to the people, making him an important political figure. Lincolns main point was that slavery was a moral, not legal issue.

    Lincoln only won 40% of the vote. The other side was so divided that Lincoln earned the highest percentage, even though he wasn't on several state ballots.

    Lincoln was not going to change the rules in the south, but would not allow it in any new states added to the Union.

    South Carolina chose to leave the union, then on April 12, 1861 Confederates fired on Fort Sumter ending all hope of peaceful compromise.
