What is reflection?

A reflection happens when light bounces off of an object.

What is refraction?

Refraction happens when light passes from one medium to another and changes direction (a bend).

What does it mean when light is absorbed?

The light rays stop on an object. They are not reflected nor do they pass through the object.

What does opaque mean?

The material lets no light through.

Describe what happens to light when it hits a mirror.

When light hits a mirror it is reflected.

Describe what happens to light when it moves from air into water.

The light slows down and changes direction as it enters the water from the air. It is refracted.

Can you see clearly through a translucent object?

No, translucent objects only let some light through.

**Reflective Objects**

Name one example of refraction you see in everyday life.

Glasses, rainbows, magnifying glasses, water in a cup, etc.

Why do dark surfaces get warmer in sunlight?

Dark surfaces absorb more light which is transformed into more thermal energy.

How is a translucent object different from an opaque one?

Trnaslucent objects will allow some light through, while opaque ones allow no light through.

The light refracts as it leaves the air and begins to pass through the surface.
