The Arctic is the area around the North Pole.
It is frozen all year.
But many animals live there.
How can they survive in the cold?
They have black skin.
The black color absorbs the sun’s heat.
They also have a thick layer of fat.
This fat keeps them warm.
The long outer hair protects oxen from cold wind.
And the short inner hair traps air.
This air stays warm because of their body heat.
They live in burrows under the snow.
They make many snow tunnels.
The snow protects the burrows from the cold.
Lemmings put fur, feathers, or grass inside.
Then they can stay warm there.
