A formal legal document ordering or prohibiting some act.
Writ
A serious crime, typically one involving violence, regarded as more serious than a misdemeanor, and usually punishable by imprisonment for more than one year or by death.
Felony
Legal work undertaken voluntarily and without payment or at a reduced fee as a public service.
Pro Bono
A writ ordering a person to attend a court.
Subpoena
Entering another's land or property without permission or legal right.
Trespass
The degree, quantity, nature, and extent of interest which a person has in real and personal property.
Estate
A wrongful act or an infringement of a right (other than under contract) leading to legal liability.
Tort
The intention or knowledge of wrongdoing that constitutes part of a crime, as opposed to the action or conduct of the accused.
Mens Rea
A legal judgment that officially and formally clears a defendant of criminal charges.
Acquittal
The tendency of a convicted criminal to reoffend after serving their sentence or undergoing rehabilitation.
Recidivism
The person or party who brings a lawsuit against another party in a civil court.
Plaintiff
A court order requiring an individual or entity to either do something or refrain from doing something
Injunction
A constitutional guarantee that a person will receive fair and equal treatment under the law, including the right to a fair trial.
Due Process
A formal agreement between two or more sovereign states, legally binding under international law.
Treaty
The full right and power of a state to govern itself without interference from outside sources or bodies.
