Define Evolution
the change in heritable characteristics of biological populations over successive generations.
Define species
A population of organisms that are capable of interbreeding to produce live, viable, and fertile offspring
What is a gene pool
the sum of all genetic material and variability within the population
Define population
Consists of members of one species living in a particular place at a particular time
What is a pre-zygotic mechanism
Act to restrict members of different species from breeding.
What is a post-zygotic mechanism
Occur after a reproductive event has occurred, including fertilisation, in which a zygote has formed (which is a hybrid of two closely related species)
What is gene flow
Movement of alleles between different populations of the same species. When species move in & out of populations.
What is genetic drift
Random changes in the frequency of alleles. Has more impact on small populations. Change in the frequency of alleles in the population due to chance events
