A year you take time off your regular routine to do something different, usually before starting university.

It was a chance to travel and learn about different people and places before going to college.

They graduated from high school the same year Canada was celebrating its 150 anniversary.

They would live on a budget of $200 each for the duration of the trip.

By hitchhiking, trekking and occasionally taking the bus.

Camping and being invited into people's homes.
Why didn't they need to spend all their money?
People they met were willing to help them.
Where did they spend more of their time during their trip?
In the interior of the country.
What did they learn by working on a wheat farm?
A greater appreciation of where food comes from and how hard farmers work.
How did the experience affect Tony?
It opened his mind and he feels more aware of the social and economic issues affecting Canadians.
