What is a colony?
A place taken and controlled by another country.
Who was in charge of the First Fleet?
Captain Arthur Phillip.
When did the First Fleet arrive in Australia?
18th January 1788.
Why did the First Fleet come to Australia?
To start a new colony and send prisoners there.
Where did the First Fleet first land?
Botany Bay.
Why did they move from Botany Bay to Port Jackson?
Because Botany Bay had poor soil and little fresh water.
What is the name of the place where the First Fleet settled?
Sydney.
When was the first settlement made?
26th January 1788.
Why was it called Sydney?
It was named after Lord Sydney in Britain.
What does "Terra Nullius" mean?
Land that belongs to no one.
Why was “Terra Nullius” not true?
Because Aboriginal people already lived there.
What is a convict?
A person sent to jail for breaking the law.
What is a penal colony?
A place where prisoners are sent to live and work.
Why did Britain need a new place for prisoners?
Their jails were too full.
Why couldn’t Britain send prisoners to America anymore?
America said no after they became independent.
What were some reasons Britain started a colony in Australia?
To get more land, send prisoners and find new resources.
