a regular amount of money that a law court orders a person to pay to his or her partner after a divorce
alimony
money that is paid to someone in exchange for something that has been lost or damaged or for some problem
compensation
money paid by an employer to an employee whose job the employer has had to bring to an end
severance pay
money that someone is given regularly by their employer or by the government to pay for a particular thing, for example, travel
allowance
a donation for a college or university, a hospital, or other organization
endowment
money that is paid by a government or organization to make prices lower, reduce the cost of producing goods etc
subsidy
an amount of money given especially by the government, normally to study or do research
grant
a situation in which a business or a person becomes unable to pay their debts
bankruptcy
an amount of money that you pay at the time that you buy something but is only a part of the total cost
down payment
one of a number of parts into which an amount of money that is owed has been divided. Payments are made regularly until the total amount has been paid back
instalment
an amount of money that is paid in one large amount on one occasion
lump sum
a payment to someone who sells goods that is directly related to the amount sold
commission
a payment made to writers, people who have invented things, owners of property, etc. every time their books, devices, land, etc. are bought or used by others
royalty
money or a present that you give to someone so that they will do something for you, usually something dishonest
bribe
an agreement that allows you to borrow money from a bank or similar organization, especially in order to buy a house
mortgage
money, land, or possessions received from someone after the person has died
inheritance
