    People that TRAVEL to unknown or unfamiliar TERRITORIES In NE, they were the first group of people to HEAD west.

    A way of TRAVELING on the trails west in a large group. When one FOLLOWED another and traveled together, I was known for this.

    A FREIGHT system that carried MAIL on horseback. Riders delivered mail from station to station across the WEST, taking 2 weeks to travel from coast to coast.

  • Telegraph
    A COMMUNICATION system that sent messages across ELECTRIC WIRES. Sent and received messages through TAPPING sounds in code.

  • Territory
    An AREA of LAND ruled by the national GOVERNMENT. NE became one when the Kansas-Nebraska Act was signed.

    The practice of OWNING another person like PROPERTY Many people in slavery had NO FREEDOM and most were not allowed to READ, write, have MEETINGS, or get paid f

    A very large FARM where enslaved people did all the hard LABOR. Mostly found in the South where COTTON, tobacco, SUGAR, and rice were important CROPS.

    A SECRET SYSTEM used to help ENSLAVED people escape.

    A landform that BORDERS NE and Iowa. Early NE TOWNS were near to make TRANSPORTATION easier for shipping necessities.

    A LANDFORM that the pioneers on the Oregon and Mormon Trails FOLLOWED while traveling through NE.

    A way to CARRY people and supplies from one place to another. Three examples of this are COVERED WAGONS, RAILROADS, and STAGECOACHES.

    A war where people from the SAME country fight against each other. The SOUTH fought for slavery against the NORTH that didn’t allow slavery.
