INFLEXIBLE IZZIE

  • Izzie was so excited for her class field trip to the park for lunch. When she arrived at school, Izzie's teacher told the class the trip was canceled. Izzie screamed "BUT I WANT TO GO ON THE TRIP!" over and over.
    Izzie could have handled the disappointment by TAKING A DEEP BREATH and telling herself IT'S NO BIGGIE. She could ask the teacher to do a fun activity instead.

  • Izzie and her friend are arguing about what game to play during recess. Izzie demands "WE'RE PLAYING UNO". Her friend wants to play a game on the Chromebook.
    Izzie could COMPROMISE. Instead of being stubborn, she can offer to play both games.  She can try her friend's game first, then play UNO.

  • Izzie's family is trying to decide where to go for a weekend outing but everyone has different ideas. Izzie starts crying and becoming agitated because she really wants to go to the Mall. Her sister wants to go to the movies.
    Izzie could TAKE A BREATH, suggest a COMPROMISE (suggest going to the MALL and then the movies), or CHOOSE TO LET IT GO (be open to going to the movies).

  • Izzie's group is almost finished with a science project, but one member accidentally deletes part of the presentation. Izzie screams "WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT? YOU RUINED EVERYTHING!"
    Izzie could have TAKEN A DEEP BREATH to help stay calm and work together to rebuild the lost work.

  • Izzie usually talks with her friend at lunch about video games. Suddenly, her friend starts talking about skateboarding, which Izzie knows nothing about. Izzie says "I don't care about skateboarding, I don't want to talk about it."
    Izzie could tell herself "NO BIGGIE" and talk about skateboarding for a while, then politely switch the topic.

  • In class, Izzie's teacher changed her seat. She is no longer sitting next to her best friend. Izzie refuses to sit in the new seat .
    Izzie could ASK FOR HELP. She could calmly tell her teacher she is having a hard time accepting that she won't be sitting with her best friend.

  • Izzie's school planned an outdoor field day, but on the morning of the event, it starts raining. Instead of canceling, the teacher moves the event indoors. Izzie says I'M NOT PLAYING UNLESS IT'S OUTISIDE.
    Izzie could CHOOSE TO LET IT GO and adjust to the unexpected change in plans and enjoy the event in a new way.

  • Izzie always played midfield on her soccer team but the coach switched her to defense. She did not feel prepared for the chance and decided not to put any effort into the game.
    Izzie could ASK FOR HELP (told the coach she isn't comfortable), TAKEN A DEEP BREATH (help feel less nervous), TELL HERSELF NO BIGGIE (tried something new).

  • Izzie is in a group for science, but they can't agree on how to do the project. Izzie want to make a poster but her group wants to make a video.
    Izzie could ASK FOR HELP (tell her group she isn't sure how to make a video), LET IT GO (learn a new skill).

  • Izzie tries out for the school play; she wants a lead role so she can sing. After the auditions, she learns she got a smaller part where she doesn't sing. Izzie tells the director she won't in the play unless she gets the part she wants.
    She can CHOOSE TO LET IT GO.  She can accept her dissapointment and  (tell herself she will practice singing and try again next year).

  • Izzie's teacher announced a pop quiz in Math.  Izzie has not studied.   Izzie refuses to take the test because the teacher did not tell her about the quiz in advance.
    TAKE A DEEP BREATH (help her to feel calm), ASK FOR HELP (tell the teacher she feels unprepared)

  • In band class, Izzie's trumpet suddenly stops working. She can't play so she gets frustrated and starts stomping her feet and clenching her fists.
    TAKE A DEEP BREATH or ASK FOR HELP (tell the teacher, who can offer to lend you a spare instrument).

  • Izzie looks forward to Art class everyday. Today when she arrived to class, her teacher was absent. She was disappointed because it was an unexpected change.
    Izzie can TELL HERSELF NO BIGGIE (tell herself it's dissapointing but her teacher will be back someday soon ).

  • Izzie is playing TROUBLE with some friends during group. She is frustrated because an opponent jumped over her piece and sent her back home.
    TAKE A DEEP BREATH (to help feel calm) and TELL HERSELF IT'S NO BIGGIE because these are the rules of the game. Rules make the game fun.

  • Izzie's volleyball team in gym keeps losing. Izzie does not like losing all the time! She think's its unfair. She starts yelling at her teammates "YOU ARE MAKING US LOSE!!"
    TAKE A DEEP BREATH (to help feel calm), ASK THE TEACHER FOR HELP (tell the teacher you are having a hard time with disappointment), CHOOSE TO LET IT GO

  • Izzie is on her Chromebook in class. Her Chromebook begins freezing and stops working. She starts banging on the keys and yelling "THIS ISN'T WORKING!"
    ASK FOR HELP (she could ask a friend, or the teacher to help problem solve and fix the computer).
