What is an objective summary?
A summary that does not have any personal feelings or opinions
A character has a conflict with a group about laws or beliefs
Character v. Society
A character has a struggle with another character in the story
Character v. Character
A character has a conflict with something in nature (weather, the ocean, animal)
Character v. Nature
A character has a struggle with his or her own feelings/emotions
Character v. Self
A struggle between a character and something else (other characters, nature, the world around them etc): External or Internal Conflict?
External Conflict
The beginning of a story; the characters and setting are introduced
Exposition
When and where the story takes place.
Setting
A series of events that build from conflict and lead to the climax of a story.
Rising Action
The events that take place after the climax of a story. These events lead to the conclusion of the story.
Falling Action
The turning point or the most exciting part of the story. Something occurs that changes the outcome for the characters. After, the conflict begins to resolve.
Climax
The message, lesson, or moral of the story that the author wishes the reader to understand.
Theme
The main character in a story on which the reader focuses attention.
Protagonist
A struggle between a character and themselves; usually over a decision they must make (heart vs. the mind; right vs. wrong, etc). External or Internal Conflict?
Internal Conflict
he story comes to an end. The conflict is resolved or has reached a conclusion.
Resolution
The character or force that is against the protagonist and their goals.
