1/5 x 10 = 2, so 1/5 x 11 is about 2.
5) Estimate the product: 3/5 x 10/11
10/11 is almost 1, so 3/5 x 1 = 3/5. Therefore, 3/5 x 10/11 is about 3/5.
6) Estimate the product: 4u7/8 x 2u1/12
4u7/8 is about 5 and 2u1/12 is about 2. 5 x 2 = 10. Therefore, 4u7/8 x 2u1/12 is about 10.
7) Shade the model on WBK 731. What is 2 x 3/5?
2 x 3/5 = 6/5 or 1u1/5
8) Multiply. Write each product in simplest form: 2/5 x 16
2/5 x 16 = 32/5 or 6u2/5
9) Multiply. Write each product in simplest form: 18 x 1/6
18 x 1/6 = 3
10) Multiply. Write each product in simplest form: 6 x 3/5
6 x 3/5 = 18/5 or 3u3/5
11) Diane sent 25 invitations to her birthday party. If 1/6 of the invitations were for her family, about how many family members did she invite?
1/6 of 25 is like 1/6 x 24. 1/6 x 24 = 4, so Diane invited about 4 family members.
12) A recipe calls for 2/3 cup of brown sugar. Marilyn is making 5 batches. How many cups of brown sugar should Marilyn use?
2/3 cup for 5 batches is 2/3 x 5. 2/3 x 5 = 10/3 or 3u1/3 cups of brown sugar is used for 5 batches.
13) There are 24 students in Mr. Sampson's math class. One-third of the students received a B on a recent test. The rest earned an A on the test. How many students scored an A?
B: 1/3 x 24 = 8 students A: 24 total students - 8 students (B) = 16 students who scored an A.
14) Jacinta is working on a jigsaw puzzle that has exactly 403 pieces. She has completed 1/4 of the puzzle. About how many pieces does Jacinta have LEFT to place in the puzzle?
Completed: 1/4 x 400 or about 100 pieces completed. Left to Finish: 400 total pieces - 100 completed = about 300 pieces are left
15) George has a collection of 16 postcrds from the states shown in the table on WBK 732. How many postcards does he have from California?
3/8 of 16 is 3/8 x 16 or 48/8 which is exactly 6 postcards.
