  • What is a force? What are two examples of a force?
The capacity to do work or cause physical change; energy, strength, or active power; something that makes an object move, i.e. a push or pull.

  • How can forces change the motion of an object? Name three ways.
Start/stop moving, speed up/slow down, change direction, etc.
  •  15
  • What is a contact force? What is an example of a contact force?
A force between objects that touch.
  •  15
  • What is the force called that pushes and pulls a magnet to another magnet?
    Magnetism.

  • What do magnets attract? What don't magnets interact with? What do magnets repel?
They attract and repel certain metals that have magnetic properties, based on their polarity. They don't interact with non-metallic objects.

  • What effect does gravity have on objects?
The (Newtonian) theory of gravity claims that mass attracts mass; the earth pulls everything on it towards its center of mass. (things fall down)

  • What happens when you squeeze a hand brake on a bicycle or motorcycle?
The brake pads apply FRICTION to the tires, slowing it down.
  •  15
  • How can you tell that friction is a force?
it changes the motion of objects (typically slowing them down).
  •  15
  • Name three types of forces.
Gravitational, electromagnetic, stong+weak nuclear forces. Also: magnetic, contact (such as: friction, tension, air pressure, applied, spring, etc.).

  • A baseball player hits a baseball pitched by a pitcher. Describe the forces at play in this scenario.
Pitcher: tension, applied, air pressure. Batter: applied, spring. (most are contact forces)
