The passage that leads from the cavities of the nose and mouth to the larynx and esophagus
Pharynx
J-shaped muscular sac-like organ that stores food and grinds and mixes it into a liquid
Stomach
The beginning of the digestive tract; contains the teeth and tongue which help to grind and churn food into smaller pieces as well as the salivary glands.
Mouth
Moistens food and begins digestion and also lubricates food as it passes through the mouth, throat and esophagus
Saliva
Absorbs excess water & processes waste so that defecation (excretion of waste) is easy and convenient
Large Intestine
Long tube about 1” in diameter and 20’ long, nutrients absorbed through the walls
Small Intestine
Produces bile and secretes it into the small intestine to aid digestion
Liver
Secretes digestive enzymes into the small intestine to complete the chemical digestion of food
Pancreas
Receives stool from the colon and holds stool until evacuation
Rectum
Moves food from the throat to the stomach using muscle movement (peristalsis).
Esophagus
Stores and recycles excess bile from the small intestine so that it can be reused for digestion in later meals

Mechanical digestion is the breakdown of food by biting, grinding, and mixing in the mouth (teeth, tongue, cheeks) and stomach
What is chemical digestion?
Chemical digestion is the breakdown of food by chemicals secreted in the mouth, stomach, and liver.
How does food travel through the digestive system? To get the points you must state path of food from entering to exiting the digestive system.
Food enters via the mouth and then goes down the esophagus into the stomach. From stomach to small intestine then to large intestine and then rectum
