We left our home in the desert and moved to a house near the banks of a river. We arrived in winter. Snow covered everything. We couldn't even see the river, only a wide, treeless stretch of snow.

We were told to stay off the ice, but we went to have a look. I was used to the smooth mirror of an icy sidewalk. I'd slipped on those plenty of times before. But this ice was different. It was rough and gray.

Tom looked at the fence and all the gladness left him. Painting it would take his whole day. He sighed and brushed paint along the first board. Soon, his friend Ben stopped to tease him. "I'm going fishing, but you'd rather work", he said.

It was a beautiful day, but Rabbit didn't know that danger was near. Hawk circled slowly in the sky above him. Without warning, Rabbit was pinned to the ground by sharp talons. Hawk perched on top of him with a hungry look in his eye.

Little Billy Goat Gruff could almost taste the sweet grass on the hill. He just had to cross the bridge and he would be there. Trip-trap, trip-trap. Then a voice boomed: Who is on my bridge?! It was a troll!
