What is the root ( shoresh) that means blessed, praised?

The שְׁמַע begins with one sentence that says
G-d is one.
Why do we cover our eyes when we say the first line of the שְׁמַע ?
To help us concentrate and focus.
Why is the ע in the word שְׁמַע and the ד in the word אֶחָד larger than the other letters in the other words?
We feel and believe that we are a witness when we say .שְׁמַע
