How we do know if we/someone else talk too little?

You come inside from recess. You see a classmate's knee is scraped. You ask, “What happened?” They say, “I feel down while running.” You say, “That had to hurt! Do you need to go to the nurse?” They say, “It feels ok, thanks!"

How do we know if we/someone else are talking too much?

Tom saw that John was wearing a cast on his leg. Tom asked, “What happened?” John said he fell. Tom asked, “On what?” John responded, “Off my bed.” Tom asked, “How on earth did that happen? You must be clumsy"
