• Conversation & Reading a Room-2
     Help
  • You ask, “How was your weekend?” Your classmate says, “Great! We went to New York for my birthday,” smiles, and begins showing you pictures. What should you do to maintain the conversation?
Show interest and ask about the trip: “That's awesome. What did you guys do in New York?”
  • You've been talking about football for several minutes. Your friend says, “Yeah, definitely,” then asks, “So, did you start that history project yet?” What social cue did your friend give you?
They probably want to transition to a different topic. Follow their lead and discuss the history project.
  • You make a sarcastic joke during group work. Usually your friends laugh, but this time everyone becomes quiet and one person looks uncomfortable. What should you do?
Stop the joke rather than explaining or repeating it. You might say, “Sorry—that didn't come out the way I intended.”
